As we commemorate International Women’s Day, it’s essential to recognize the remarkable contributions of women in traditionally male-dominated fields. One area that stands out is welding, where women have played pivotal roles, particularly during World War II.

Throughout the war, as men answered the call to serve on the front lines, women seamlessly transitioned into vital roles within the workforce, assuming positions previously held by men. The iconic symbol of Rosie the Riveter emerged during this era, symbolizing the collective contribution of women to the war effort. Yet, it’s important to recognize that not all women were riveters. Many 1940s women played crucial roles across various industries, with “Winnie the Welder” standing out as another widely recognized figure. “Winnie” affectionately referred to the female welders who diligently worked in shipyards across the nation, playing a pivotal role in the construction of essential naval vessels.

One of the most notable examples is the story of the Surrency sisters – Nanelle, Carobeth, and Lauree – who became skilled welders at the Brunswick shipyard. Their dedication and expertise not only helped support the war effort but also challenged societal norms of the time.

Despite facing discrimination and skepticism, these women proved their mettle, showcasing their proficiency in welding and earning the respect of their male counterparts. Their resilience and determination paved the way for future generations of women in welding and other male-dominated industries.

Today, we continue to see women making strides in welding and other fields once considered off-limits to them. Organizations like The Welding School and initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion in the welding industry are helping to break down barriers and create opportunities for women to thrive.

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s honor the legacy of women welders from WWII and beyond. Their courage, skill, and perseverance serve as a beacon of inspiration for all women pursuing their passions in any field, including welding. At Forney, we are proud to support and empower women in welding and salute their invaluable contributions to our industry and society.
